Agents.md is an open-source inspired blueprint for orchestrating multiple AI agents (like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok). Much like README.md defines projects, Agents.md defines workflows, documenting roles, goals, and outputs. It brings clarity, repeatability, and collaboration to the chaotic world of multi-agent work.

Agents.md — The README for the AI Agent Era

We’re stepping into a new era of software , we call it Vibe Development - where coding isn’t just about writing lines of code, but orchestrating AI agents, workflows, and creativity together.

From ChatGPT to Claude, Gemini, Grok, and countless open-source LLMs, developers now have a powerful set of AI agents at their disposal. Each is strong in its own way: some excel in research, others in reasoning, and some in code generation

But here’s the catch: working with multiple agents often feels like juggling knives. Context is lost, workflows are repeated, and desired outputs are scattered across platforms. This is where the idea of Agents.md comes in.

What is Agents.md?

At its core, Agents.md is a lightweight markdown file that acts as a blueprint for orchestrating multiple AI agents.

Just as README.md documents a project’s purpose and usage, Agents.md documents:

  • Which agents are being used
  • What roles they play
  • The workflow they should follow
  • The expected final output

It’s a simple but powerful concept: define once, orchestrate everywhere.

The Open-Source Spark

Agents.md is inspired by the spirit of open source — sharing knowledge in the simplest, most portable way.

Markdown (.md) was chosen because it’s:

  • Universal — readable on any platform, from GitHub to Notion.
  • Lightweight — no special software needed.
  • Version-controllable — easily tracked with Git for collaboration.

By keeping the format open and human-readable, Agents.md could become a community standard — just like README.md did for documentation.

How it Started

The idea emerged from the chaos developers face today:

  • You use Claude for drafting, but then jump to ChatGPT for technical depth.
  • You ask Gemini for the latest papers, but need Grok for quick one-liners.
  • You repeat prompts, lose track of steps, and often redo the same process tomorrow.

Instead of scattered mental notes, Agents.md was born to capture the entire workflow in one place.

Explaining the Workflow

Here’s what an Agents.md might look like in practice:

Agents.md

Goal Write a research-backed blog on Neuro-Symbolic AI.

Agents

-- Gemini → Gather latest research references

-- Claude → Draft in natural, conversational tone

-- ChatGPT → Add technical depth with code snippets

-- Grok → Summarize into catchy one-liners

Workflow 1 -> Gemini collects resources

Workflow 2 -> Claude creates a narrative draft

Workflow 3 -> ChatGPT enhances with technical details and examples

Workflow 4 -> Grok polishes with concise hooks and summaries

Output:

A long-form blog post that is both research-rich and reader-friendly.

Instead of running around re-prompting four different agents every time, you now have a single source of truth that anyone on your team (or even future-you) can replicate.

Conclusion

The world of AI agents is only getting bigger, and the problem of orchestration will only grow with it. Agents.md is a simple, open, and effective solution to bring order to that chaos.

Just as every project has a README.md, tomorrow every AI-driven project could have an Agents.md defining how intelligence is orchestrated.

It’s not about replacing agents, it’s about aligning them.
It’s not about control, clarity, repeatability, and collaboration.

Agents.md is our playbook for the multi-agent era.
